What is Category 1, 2, & 3 Water?

Category 1: “Clean Water”
This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can degrade into category 2 or 3 within 72 hours.

Category 2: “Gray Water”
This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow. Category 2 or Gray Water can possibly contain bacteria and viruses. If left untreated, it can degrade into category 3 within 72 hours.

Category 3: “Black Water”
This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap (the drain) water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth. This type of water may contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals and microbes.

Why Immediate Sewage Clean Up Is Essential

Sewage water, often classified as Category 3 water, contains harmful bacteria, viruses, and biohazards that can spread rapidly. Even a small delay can worsen damage and increase health risks. Prompt sewage clean up helps prevent contamination from spreading to walls, flooring, furniture, and HVAC systems.

Risks of delayed sewage clean up include:

  • Increased exposure to harmful pathogens
  • Permanent damage to flooring, drywall, and substructures
  • Persistent foul odors that are difficult to remove
  • Higher chances of mold and bacterial growth
  • Costlier repairs due to extended damage

Flood Pro offers fast-response sewage clean up services in Orange County to reduce these risks and restore your home efficiently.

What Should Homeowners Do After a Sewage Backup?

A sewage backup can be overwhelming, but taking the right steps immediately can limit damage and protect your health. Homeowners should avoid direct contact with contaminated water and keep pets and children away from affected areas.

Helpful steps to take include:

  • Avoid using plumbing fixtures until the issue is addressed
  • Turn off electricity to affected areas if it is safe to do so
  • Ventilate the space by opening windows, if possible
  • Do not attempt DIY cleaning with household products
  • Contact a professional sewage clean up company right away

What should I do if sewage is in my home?

  1. Call Flood Pro Immediately.  Our office staff will walk you through the process and begin the work.
  2. Attempt to stay away from the damage.  If children are present, keep them out of harms way.  If you do have to go into the affected area.  Be careful.  Change your shoes or use shoe covers so you do not track the damage into other areas of the house.
  3. If it’s a main line back up, stop using your water.  All your drains will connect to the main drain line and water will continue to back up at the lowest point, typically a downstairs bathtub or toilet.
  4. Its best to keep away from the area. However, all your contents will need to be removed from the impacted area if they are not affected.  If off gassing occurs, the contents in the affected area could be damaged.  This typically occurs from drying the area or long term natural drying.
  5. If you haven’t called yet, Call Flood Pro.
